People At Home: Brittney & Kate

Baby Kate is the newest addition the King family and with three older brothers, her arrival was anxiously anticipated. Soon after she was born, Brittney began "operation pinkify" and Kate's nursery was underway. The end result turned out so adorable that I just had to include them in a People At Home post.

I asked Brittney what it was like to have a girl after three boys. She smiled, "It's a whole new world. It's been so fun having Kate as my fourth. Everything seems new and all of that excitement you have with your first baby has been reignited."

Brittney's goal was to create a space for Kate that was feminine, sophisticated, and something she could grow into. A room that was a beautiful nursery, but not too babyish. She selected a color palette of soft pinks, crisp whites, and gold for a touch of elegance.

A polka dot wall, gold K, crystal knobs, and a floral mobile are accessories that really pull the nursery together. Brittney has always loved pretty, feminine things and has created a space where Kate can appreciate them from a young age.

Kate's nursery turned out just as Brittney was hoping. Not only is it feminine, sophisticated and elegant, it's a room where she can always enjoy some peaceful girl time with Kate. It took time, planning, and work, and there are still some finishing touches Brittney would like to add but I'd say "operation pinkify" was a definite success!

People At Home: J + K

How many people do you know who aren't afraid to be themselves? I mean people who really, truly aren't afraid to embrace who they are and what they love. They're not concerned about who's watching or the status quo, they're just always so them. Meet Jane and Kody. They are those people. Fun, happy, unique and creative. These two know how to make a home, even when living in a small apartment. It's the perfect blend of items they love, places they've been, and things they've made. Every room is an expression of their style and what they think makes life beautiful. It's just so them

Jane made the paper wheels above the sofa after seeing some she loved at Paper Source! She's always been great at visualizing things in 3D and creating with her hands.

When Jane and Kody were dating, Kody traveled to Paris. He asked Jane if there was anything she'd like him to bring home for her. At the time, Jane wasn't quite sure where things were going in the relationship or if they would even continue dating once he was home. She told him she only wanted something from Paris if it was authentic Chanel. Kody gladly obliged...until he visited the Chanel store! He quickly realized "authentic Chanel" was most likely out of his budget, but he was determined to not return home empty handed. Instead he bought Jane the beautifully framed print shown above. It's a lovely black and white photo of Coco Chanel herself. Clever, thoughtful, and authentic indeed!

Kody loves rhinos, Jane loves elephants. I love seeing them thoughtfully placed throughout their home. They always spark a smile and tell a story in their own little way.

Jane + Kody. What's not to love? Their apartment shows so much spunk and personality, in the very best way. When it comes to creating a home, these two know how to make it their very own. I think the most successful spaces reflect the people inside, the ones that leave you thinking "it's just so them!"

Thanks for sharing your home with me, Jane and Kody! What a wonderful place to be.

People At Home: Sylvia

When I decided to start People At Home, Sylvia was one of the first people who came to my mind. She lives in my sister's neighborhood in Rexburg, ID. My sister and I went to visit her and her husband one afternoon a couple of years ago and she was vibrant, eccentric, spunky and unique. We chatted on their front porch where I could see into the living room of their home. I wanted to go inside.

Since then, Sylvia's husband has passed away but she is as pleasant and bright as ever. Born in Quebec, Canada during the Great Depression, she lost her mother when she was only two. Her mother was 24 years old when she passed away due to complications from an abortion. Fearing she could not provide for another child and pressured by family, she turned to this as a solution. Sylvia and her older sister were raised by their father and step-mother who Sylvia describes as "not nice at all."

She grew up attending a very strict Presbyterian church but was later converted to the LDS church. She never expected to become a Mormon, she remembers being shocked when she saw Mormon women attending meetings wearing no hats or gloves!

She raised her family in Rexburg in a house that she describes as "homey and with purpose." She loves surrounding herself with beauty and creating a home that has a feeling of peace. Her house is filled with plants, beautiful framed art, and objects that visually interact with one another.

Sylvia is an accomplished pianist and has played for over 75 years. At age 84, she still teaches piano to quite a few students. Her music room may be the most striking room in her home. It is filled with sheet music that she is constantly collecting for herself and students. When she plays the piano, the room comes alive. Her music is deep, rich, and from the heart—just like her home.

Although growing old is a hard challenge, she says she really has nothing to complain about. Because when you look around, you can always find someone who has it harder than you.

Thank you, Sylvia! What a wonderful experience it was to be in your home.
